Hot stamping, also known as foil stamping, is a popular decorative printing process that transfers metallic or colored foil onto paper, cardboard, rigid boxes, notebooks and other substrate surfaces.
A heated metal die is pressed against the foil sheet under controlled temperature and pressure. The heat melts the adhesive layer of the foil, so the decorative foil layer sticks to the target material while the leftover carrier film peels away.
This craft creates shiny, eye‑catching metallic effects including gold, silver, bronze and custom matte colors. It delivers sharp, fine‑line patterns, logos and text. Hot stamping does not use ink, so it performs well on special coated papers and is widely used for luxury packaging, gift boxes, book covers and brand promotional products.
Common optional variations include matte hot stamping, holographic foil stamping and multi‑color hot stamping. It can be combined with embossing for more three‑dimensional visual and tactile effects.
Die
An engraved metal die carries your artwork. Mounted to the press, it defines exactly where foil lands.
Heat
The die heats to roughly 90–120°C, activating the heat-sensitive adhesive on the back of the foil.
Pressure
The hot die presses the foil onto the surface. Heat + pressure together bond the metallic layer permanently.
What’s inside.
A stamping foil is a stack of ultra-thin layers. Heat releases the decorative layers from their carrier and the adhesive bonds them to your substrate — leaving only the finish behind.
Polyester Carrier Film (PET)
Provides strength and stability during transfer.
Release Layer
Allows the decorative layers to separate from the carrier film when heat is applied.
Colour Lacquer Layer
Creates the visible foil color and finish.
Aluminium Metallization Layer
Provides metallic shine and reflectivity.
Heat-Activated Adhesive Layer
Bonds the foil to the substrate during stamping.

What is hot stamping foil?
A heat-transferable metallic or pigment layer applied to a substrate under pressure. Permanent, sharp, no ink involved.
Hot vs cold foil
Hot uses heat + die. Cold uses adhesive + UV. Hot is sharper, cold is faster — both have their place.
How foil stamping works
Die + Heat + Pressure. Get these three right and the finish follows on every job.
How to choose the right foil
Substrate first. Brand intent second. Finish third. We help printers and designers triangulate.
Common mistakes
Wrong temp, wrong dwell, wrong substrate. Most foil ‘defects’ are spec mismatches — fixable in a phone call.
Foil compatibility
Coated vs uncoated. UV-coated boards. Plastics. Leather. Each needs its own foil grade.
